Being a police firearms instructor is a difficult and
largely thankless job. One of the more difficult
aspects of the job can be coming up with lesson plans
and courses of fire. When I first started as an
instructor I had to create my own class materials from
scratch. That was interesting.
Since then my lesson plans and courses of fire have
gone through revision after revision, continuously
moving toward the goal of providing training that
balances range safety and realism in order to help an
officer survive a deadly force encounter. If you
are a police firearms instructor looking for some ideas
to use in your own training program, I'd be happy to
help. For a very, very low fee (you have to say
"thank you") I will burn a CD containing all of my
lesson plans and courses of fire and mail it to you at
your department. The material is copyrighted but
I'm giving you permission to use it for training your
department. If anyone wants to sell it we'll have
to get together to discuss my cut.
In Brookfield, we carry Sig-Sauer P226's and P229's
in .40 caliber. We also have Bushmaster .223
caliber patrol rifles. The lesson plans can easily
be adjusted to work with pretty much any types of rifle
or semi-automatic pistol. We used to carry Benelli
M1 S90 12-gauge semiautomatic shotguns and I still have
the lesson plans and courses of fire for those as well.

If you have any specific questions as to what my
lesson plans include or whether they will work for your
department fee free to email me through the links found
at the bottom of every page on this site. If you
would like me to send you a CD you can likewise contact
me through the link at the bottom of every page on this
site. I'll need your name, department phone
number, department address, and your ORI in order to
verify that you're a law enforcement officer.
Since my lesson plans detail how cops are trained to
respond in deadly force situations I will not send them
to anyone outside of law enforcement. Once I get
all that information and verify that you are who you say
you are, I'll burn a CD and mail it to you free of
charge.
Please do not leave me a voice mail message at work
with all of your information on it. It seems that
most people who have done that were under the impression
that they were participating in some sort of
speed-talking contest and I had a hell of a time
deciphering their hypersonic babble.
After you get the CD feel free to edit/alter/adjust
the material any way you like. If you just needed
some ideas you can look over the files and then come up
with your own. If you want to use the lesson plans
or courses of fire exactly as they are you can do that
too.
Picture this situation: You respond to an
active shooter at your local high school. The
shooter has a rifle, you and your fellow officers have
shotguns and pistols. How long are the corridors
in a typical high school? Fifty yards? A
hundred yards in certain spots? Even longer?
Do you want to be in a position where a rifleman is
firing at you from a hundred yards away and you are
returning fire with your pistol or a shotgun? Even
a shotgun loaded with rifled slugs? You need a
rifle. A semi-automatic-only .223-caliber rifle to
be exact.
Unfortunately there can be a lot of obstacles in the
way of implementing a patrol rifle program in your
department. I can help you overcome those
obstacles. In addition to the lesson plans and
courses of fire I offer, I can also give you a copy of
my original proposal to my own Chief of Police regarding
the implementation of a patrol rifle program. That
report has enough information in it to give you a head
start in coming up with your own proposal. As with
the lesson plans I am only willing to give this
information to other law enforcement professionals, and
I am willing to do so for free. If you would like
me to send you a CD with the patrol rifle report you can
contact me through the link at the bottom of every page
on this site. I'll need your name, department
phone number, department address, and your ORI in order
to verify that you're a law enforcement officer.
Once I get all that I'll burn a CD and mail it to your
department address.
